Freesat, the Free to Air Satellite Service, has reached 600, 000 unit sales since their launch in May 2008.
Following initial shortages of stock, the platform is now increasing sales faster than at anytime since launch, as sales increased 50% during the last quarter.

30th September 2009 is National Retune Day.
This is the date for a nationwide upgrade to the Freeview Digital TV Service.
Following the upgrade all viewers will need to retune their Freeview Equipment, if they do not, they will no longer receive certain channels. All Freeview products will need to be retuned, including Set Top Boxes, Digital TVs & Freeview+ Recorders
The main services affected are Channel 5, ITV 4 & the Radio Services of the BBC.
Following completion of the Digital Switch Over in 2012, certain parts of the country will be left with a level of service that is being dubbed ‘Freeview Lite’ These are areas served by smaller relay transmitters, which will only be broadcasting 3 or 4 of the 6 available Multiplexes. By moving channels now, this will ensure that C5 is available on the Public Service Broadcast Multiplexes (PSB) following 2012.
It is also suggested that the reshuffle will pave the way for the launch of the proposed Freeview HD Multiplex, which will carry a maximum of 5 HD Channels nationwide by the Olympics in 2012. The Freeview HD platform is due to start broadcasting in the Granada region by the end of 2009. There are currently no receivers on sale able to decode the new service.
Satellite, Sky, Freesat & Cable viewers are not affected by the retune programme.

OFCOM, who govern the allocation of UK Radio Spectrum, have confirmed the release of a small part of spectrum for use in Home Cinema & Audio Visual applications.
Wideband Data Transmittion Technology – WBDTS – will allow the transfer of HD Video & Audio content between Home AV Devicies without HDMI Leads, Cat5 etc.
The allocated part of Radio Spectrum, at 2400-2483.5 MHz and 57-66 GHz, will be avaliable without Licence.

Sky and Microsoft have announced that the Sky Player service will be available to XBox 360 owners from Autumn 2009.
The service will offer Streaming, Live Channels, Video On Demand (VOD) content and Pay Per View Special Events.
Details are not yet fully released but it is anticipated existing Sky customers with a valid XBox LIVE account will be able to access the Sky Player as they can now from a PC or MAC and also purchase one off Movies, Sports events etc using their Sky account or LIVE Points.
Non Sky subscribing XBox owners will be able to purchase different ‘Packages’ offering various channels or special events, again using XBox LIVE Points.
High Definition Movies and SKY HD content will be available on a ‘forward and store’ service, with content saved to the XBox Hard Drive offering a greater range of content to that currently offered via XBox LIVE.
With its Broadband connection, access to MSN Messenger and XBox Gamer Profiles, subscribers will be able to communicate with eachother, in real time, whilst watching football matches and streaming content.
This is a major coup for Microsoft and Sky, as Sony’s PS3 and Nintendo’s Wii both currently offer access to the full web & BBC iPlayer.

The governing body for the HDMI specification – HDMI Licensing LLC, has confirmed some of the new improvements incorporated in the latest version of HDMI – V1.4

AVAV Systems are pleased to announce availability of a new range in Optical Satellite Distribution systems – FibreMDU.
The new product range, from Global Invacom, utilises Optic Fibre to distribute the satellite signals from the Dish LNB through the distribution system. The result being very low loss of signal quality as far as possible through the entire network. This technology is ideally suited to situations were the dish is a long way from the receiver, or many receivers are supplied via one dish – in IRS Systems, dwellings where multiple satellite receivers are required, or commercial systems. Another andvantage is only one cable – where previously many were required. All the fibre cables in the range are ‘Armoured’ for added strength and are LSZH – Low Smoke Zero Halogen – for enhanced safety in the event of fire.

Japans Public Broadcaster, NHK, has joined Freesat. The channel can be found on the Freesat EPG, Channel 209.
The channel covers the Japan and Asia regions and is broadcast in English. Covering News, Current Affairs, J-Pop – Japans Pop Music Culture Scene – and Anime.
Panasonic Freesat IDTVs will automatically show the new channel on the programme guide. Users of Humax Receivers and PVRs will need to accept the latest update, when prompted, to add this and any other new channels to their Programme Guide.
